MOD Defence Academy at Shrivenham

The Defence Academy is a unique high quality facility used extensively by the MOD and Cranfield University, including for the ‘Symposia at Shrivenham’, an important education forum for Government agencies, military and civilian industry, and research establishments. For this latest contract, Brockhouse designed, manufactured and installed extensive bespoke acoustic movable walls, 20.93m wide and 4.49m high with an acoustic rating of  51dB. The movable walls were  part of a major conversion of a large undergraduate workshop into a multi-use main arena, providing a lecture hall for 350 people with adjoining display area for military and civilian purposes, including a Trade Show arena for 30 exhibitors.

The flexibility and top acoustic performance of the movable walls means the maximum use is made of the space. As an example, the College of Management and Technology, and Cranfield University graduation ceremony was held in the space, including 650 people plus band, with the walls opened and seating rearranged. SERCO, who manage the facility for the MOD, are also able to re-configure the space to meet the needs of other users who hire the facility.

Product Specification: Manufactured by Brockhouse in the UK. Series 600 system comprised a total of 18 high performance movable acoustic wall panels, including two pass doors. The panels are top hung with no floor track and offer excellent acoustic insulation. The purpose made individual modular panel system incorporates anodized interlocking edge profiles. Integral magnetic strips provide a tightening torque of 70N per metre. Each panel is fitted with positive automatic self locking height adjustment device to the rollers.Telescopic end closure panel with internal vertical expanding section that has a travel of 100mm and is fitted with retractable top and bottom seals.

Operation: Each panel is moved individually into position via the top track and locked into position. Individually operated by a removable winding handle inserted into the edge profile of each panel, the telescopic closure panel is activated by one single escutcheon to the face that extends the peripheral seals in one single operation. Roller and tracking system ensures easy operation and movement of panels with a minimum of effort.

Construction details: All panels are constructed using16mm high density particle board class E1, with acoustic free separation from welded tubular steel peripheral frame. Maintenance free spring loaded two piece aluminium retractable seals to give a seal pressure of 2000N (200kgs) per metre. Mechanically operated rapid action crank mechanism using scissor link to extend acoustically broken aluminium pressure beams. Internal insulation is supplied to achieve specified sound reduction using layers of sound reducing material.
